Innovation Rooted in Culture

The Procter & Gamble Technical Center in Beijing is a flagship facility that anchors the company’s innovation efforts across the Asia-Pacific. More than a functional space, it represents a thoughtful convergence of global R&D standards, local culture, and sustainable design. Encompassing 34,000 square meters of offices, laboratories, and pilot manufacturing areas,

the center supports research excellence while fostering a human-centered workplace. Inspired by traditional Chinese spatial principles—light, flow, and openness—the design balances technical rigor with an intuitive sense of place. At its core is a four-story atrium that floods the interior with natural light and serves as a restorative focal point for employees.

Flexible, modular laboratories are positioned around this heart of the building, designed for easy reconfiguration as research needs evolve. Sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting systems and passive daylighting strategies not only reduce environmental impact but also elevate performance and user comfort. Aidea led the architectural design, while Kolar Design led the experiential design, in close collaboration with P&G’s global teams.

From day one, the center was conceived not just as a workplace, but as a benchmark for future innovation hubs. Cultural integration played a vital role, with Chinese architectural motifs reinterpreted into the form and flow of the space. The result is a building that speaks to its Beijing context while seamlessly aligning with P&G’s international standards.

The Experience Design strategy plays a pivotal role in reinforcing identity and clarity throughout the space. Drawing from Chinese visual traditions and P&G’s brand ethos, the graphic system enhances navigation, and expresses a unified workplace culture. Modular and adaptable, the graphics evolve with the space, embedding storytelling and shared purpose into the daily experience of its users. In its integration of design, innovation, and culture, the P&G Technical Center stands as a model for forward-looking research environments around the world.
